“Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.” – Ibn Battuta

As a teacher the worst words I hear during a staff meeting or read in an email is “be flexible.” What those words to say to me is that no one is really prepared for what is getting ready to happen, and those in charge are just going to react on the fly. Another phrase that drives me insane is “lean in.” That was said a lot during 2020. To me it meant that whoever was presenting had these plans created, but they had no idea how they are going to work, but they wanted you to “lean in” to see if maybe the listener understands what is happening so they can explain it to the presenter. However when it comes to travel “be flexible” is very important. You never what is going to happen on a trip. The most unpredictable part of a trip is the weather. I remember when we went camping once near the North Carolina Zoo, and it rained almost the entire week. We had to time most of our activates around the rain in order to be able to see the Zoo without having rain pour on us the entire week. The unexpected can always happen on a trip, and we have prepare ourselves for anything in order to enjoy our experience.

Back in 2019 my family and I took a cruise that went along the coast of Central America. One of our stops was Belize City. We had a shore excursion planned for that day. I have no idea what we had planned for that day. When we arrived at the meeting point for our departure, we found out that the ocean waves were really wild that day. Apparently one of the ferry boats had got stuck near the cruise ship so they couldn’t send anyone to shore. They told us that our excursions might happen, but it wasn’t looking good. So we cancelled our planned excursion, and decided to have a port day once we were able to go. While we didn’t get to do what we wanted to do that day, we still were able to have a fun day at port filled with food, shopping, family and fun.

Things I have learned while traveling.
