Favorite Part of the Day

Often my fifth graders ask me what is my favorite part of the day. I usually jokily say things like, lunch, recess or dismissal. I know for most of them that is more than likely the case. To be honest I am not that big of fan of dismissal. While I teach older students, in the elementary world it is very important that students go home the right way. The worst think you can happen is a student go to the bus, and they should be waiting on someone in the car to pick them up. Sometimes though students will see through my usual responses, and then ask me what my favorite subject is? They are expecting me to say science or math because those are the two subjects I teach. My favorite subject is social studies. I miss teaching it because I believe that history is important. Often times I will jump in with a little social studies during my social and emotional learning times during the morning meeting. If I had to be honest, my favorite time of the day is the morning meeting. This is that first part of the day where students are able to reflect on how they are feeling, learn how to interact better with one another, and study various cultures that have impacted our communities. I also use this time to further connect with students and have them connect further with each other.

These photos if you couldn’t tell I actually took last summer at Freedom Park. This is one of my favorite parks to visit in Charlotte because it is filled with biking trails, a lake, and other great features you would expect to see in a park. Just about every time I go, I get some great photos of this place.
