Keep the Old Things Going

“The greatest use of a life is to spend it on something that will outlast it.” – William James

I enjoy visiting old buildings and old landmarks whenever I travel to different locations. To me, it’s like a blast to the past, and way to see how things used to be. Sadly, where I live is not good about preserving old things. While Charlotte is filled with historic landmark signs throughout the city, sadly most of the landmarks have long been torn down. I think the city should do a better job of preserving its history. While I am all about having new things, I want to make sure that we remember what life used to be like in order to appreciate what we have now.

Last summer, my wife and I visited Durham, North Carolina while our kids were away at camp. We visited a place called Eno at West Point. The main reason I went was to check out some of the trails and see the falls that are there. When we arrived, we found this place had so much more from a photography museum to a working mill. You could go inside and watch them make various products using the mill. The mill was powered by the waterfall beside it, so it didn’t need electricity to work. I was neat seeing how they made things back them.
