“Measure what is measurable, and make measurable what is not so.” – Galileo Galilei

There is a lot of discussion right now about goal setting and making your goals. Many people at the beginning of the year will set a resolution for themselves. From losing weight to getting finances in order. Often, we set lofty goals for ourselves, but we don’t have goals in the middle. Most of the growth we experience is in the middle. That is the point from the beginning of our goal to the end of our goal. We have to set check point goals for while we are in the middle in order to check our progress along the way. I do this at work with my students. I have big goals for my students, and I want them to achieve those goals this year. In order to see how they are doing; I have to check their progress daily. I have check points within and at the end of every lesson I teach. I keep a spreadsheet tracking their progress in order to make sure they are on track. When we are setting our goals for 2024, we have to set checkpoints in between in order to make sure we are staying on track, looks for moments to adjust, and show us our progress along the way.

One of my goals last year was to take more photos in the mountains during the fall. I took two day trips to the North Carolina Mountains last year. The first time we went apple picking and checked out an overlook. On my second trip, I drove through one of my favorite spots in the mountains, Curtis Creek. What I love about Curtis Creek is most of the best views you can see right from your car, or a very short hike from the road. The weather was not the best that day, but I was still able to get some pretty good shots.
