“To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” – Danny Kaye

Back in December of 2021, we decided to take a trip with family to stay at a cabin outside of Gatlinburg, Tennessee. I hadn’t been to Gatlinburg in several years, and we were looking forward to the visit. Traffic was crazy on the way there, and Google Maps suggested that we take a detour along the Blue Ridge Parkway. The traffic wasn’t as bad, and we were able to see some great views. The issue we had was at one point all of us had the use the restroom, and once we got inside the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, bathrooms are not really common in that area. We held it as long as we could, and finally had to give up and use the restroom on the side of the road.

This stop in particular is the Plott Balsam Overlook. These mountains are named after the Plott Family, who are known for the creation of their famed hunting dogs, the Plott Bear Hounds. In 1989, the North Carolina General Assembly honored the Plott Hound with the designation of official State Dog. This section of the parkway offers incredible views and a beautiful landscape.
