Social media can be a great tool and a great enemy all at the same time. Many people post on Instagram and feel like no one likes their content. We compare ourselves to other people online who seem to have way more followers than us, and then we see our content as inadequate. The reality is it takes time to make content, and most people who have the “larger followings” might not have a full-time job like the rest of us who post online. Between being a husband, a dad, and a teacher, my life is already pretty full. I asked myself the following questions a few years ago:
1) Who do I make content for?
2) Why do I make it?
I make content for me because I enjoy doing it. I love taking photos with a Nikon camera and capturing videos with my GoPro. From landscape photography to sharing about my life as an elementary school teacher. Sharing my experiences allows me time to reflect on them.
Let’s think about it, what if those ten people who like your post came up to you in person and said they like your content, how would you respond? I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t know what to do. It would excite you so much to know that someone likes the content that you create. I saw a few social media posts on this a while back, and it helped reshape my perspective. Take the like as a sign of appreciation for what you do.
If you like this post or any of the others that post, like, comment, and share.

It’s taken me a long time to stop letting this bother me on social media. But I came to my senses and got over it. I post my photos to share the beauty I see. I like it, and that’s all that matters.

I’ve had a lot of people asking why I don’t monetize my blog as a full-time traveler. My answer is that it would take away the fun of it, the joy of creation, for me. I give my photos and scribbles for free, and I’m always appreciative of likes and comments. But I’ve also learned to not judge a post by its popularity. Some of my favorite posts get little traction, but that’s OK, I like them!

It’s so much work to do all that and even if you do, there’s not a lot of money in it unless you have a million followers. Also, I don’t want to lose the joy.
