Take a Moment

“Loneliness is the poverty of self; solitude is the richness of self.” – May Sarton

It seems like our society has a habit of confusing things. From the meaning of what someone says to how somethign should work. Sometimes that confusion leads to our detriment. We change things around in our head to where what we think we are doing is the right thing to something in reality is harming. Take social media for example. I love to post and look at different things online because my goal is to connect with people who have like intrests and have different perspectives on things. If you look at most of who I follow, you will see that they are either teachers or photographers. I do this to learn different ideas and connect with others who can help me grow as a person.

For some, the internet has become something that has withdrawn people from the world. Too many people use it as a way to disconnect from reality, and something that was meant to connect people becomes something that makes people lonelier. We have to find better ways to disconnect other than staring at a screen. For me personally, I have to make time to pull away. As an elementary school teacher, my brain is going all day while I am at work. I have to have moments where I can have some solitude. I have found that the healiest solitude for me is by riding my bike. The only thing I use my phone for is listening to music and tracking where I am. I don’t looking at social media or any websites while I am out. This allows me to clear my thoughts and just get away from everything. My encouragement to everyone is take a moment to unplug and get away. When you get away, make sure you are not having your eyes glued to a screen.

I took these photos last summer while my wife and I were taking a weekend without the kids to Durham, N.C. We ate at different places and check out different sites. These photos were captured at a place called the Park at Eno. The park featured several walkign trails, a working windmill and a photography musuem.
