One Popular Bridge

“The smallest deed is better than the greatest intention.” – John Burroughs

Sometimes the internet is full of surprises. We can all admit back in 2020, there were some moments that we did get a little board as a society. Some people unfortunately spiraled into conspiracy theories online, but what caught my attention was this bridge in Durham, North Carolina. This bridge is close to the city’s downtown area, and is known to locals as the can opener. It’s called the can opener because large trucks will speed through here not paying attention to the height of the bridge, and the bridge will take the roof the truck right off. I got stuck watching the videos for hours. From trucks getting stuck under the bridge to a/c units falling off travel trailers. It’s not like these vehicles are not warned before getting to the bridge. There are lights that flash and a sign that comes on if your truck is too big.

Last year, I was able to see the bridge in person for the first time. My wife and I took a child free weekend to Durham. While we were driving around town, I looked up and recognized the bridge. I took some photos and a short video of it. A few weeks ago, I posted a reel about it on Instagram, and that reel was way more popular than I thought it would be. As of writing this post, it has over 2 million views. I guess more people are into bridge destruction than I thought.

Check out the reel I made about it.
