“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.” – John Wooden

Over the past few years, I have noticed that many of my students are afraid to make a mistake. Sometimes that fear shows itself by them not trying, getting angry when an assignment doesn’t go their way, or not wanting to see their grades after they submit an assignment. It took me a while, but I have learned that making mistakes can be a sign of progress. As a teacher, I can remember many times when a lesson didn’t go as planned. I can think of many photos that I have taken that didn’t turn out the way I thought they would. However, I took those mistakes to see how I could do better. One of my goals right now is to teach my students how to use mistakes as an opportunity as opposed to a stumbling block.

I took these photos a few years ago while hiking at South Mountain State Park.
