“There is nothing new in the world except the history you do not know.” – Harry S Truman

The newspaper was a big part of my life growing up. My grandfather retired from working at the newspaper. The newspaper was delivered to my house every weekend. When I would visit my dad, we would go out for breakfast, and he would read a newspaper while we were there. For something that used to be a major part of American life, the newspaper has gone by the wayside. Many people get their news from the internet and social media. The news has not gone away, just the way we consume it has changed.

During Thanksgiving break, my son made the comment that where I grew up in Augusta, Georgia doesn’t have a downtown. My mom lives in a suburb outside of Augusta, so we don’t usually visit Augusta. So, we decided to take him to downtown Augusta to show him it does exist. While Augusta’s downtown is nothing like Uptown Charlotte, it still has a downtown. While we were driving around downtown, I took photos of all of the different places that I remembered from when I was younger, and many of the different landmarks. While this photo of an old newspaper vending machine isn’t a landmark, like a pay phone, it’s something that you don’t see anymore. I remember seeing these outsides of every restaurant I would go to, and now they are pretty much gone. Seeing this brought back memories of when my family would read the newspaper every morning, and sometimes even the afternoon edition. Now it is a relic of a bygone era.
