“It is the set of the sails, not the direction of the wind that determines which way we will go.” – Jim Rohn

There are some things that are out of our control, and other things that are in our control. Too often we allow things not in our control to determine our destiny. We focus on the things we cannot control. This is something to teach my 5th graders all the time. I teach them to focus on the things they can control. They can control their behavior in class, they can control if they are following along in class or not, and they can control how they respond to others. This same idea even helps me as an adult. I cannot control who is in my classroom, from their behavior to their life circumstances. I can control how I respond and prepare them for the next level. Focusing on what I can control is why I have been successful for the last few years.

I grew up in Augusta, Georgia. We visit family there every few months. One thing I did on my last visit there was take a drive around downtown Augusta. I had not visited downtown for a while, and it was neat to see how much some of it has changed while some of it was still the same. I wanted to visit because I mentioned to my son that Augusta had a downtown area, and he thought that was funny. He used to living in Charlotte, which has a large downtown area. We took a drive down there to show him that yes, Augusta has a downtown. I took these photos while I was at a park downtown.
