Limits

“We must not allow other people’s limited perceptions to define us.” – Virginia Satir

In 2023, I started teaching at a different school for the first time in 10 years. I came in to drop off my classroom stuff before the summer. I wore one of my teacher shirts focused on science. When the people in the front saw me for the first time they thought I wouldn’t survive teaching 5th grade. They did not know at the time that I was considered one of the best teachers in the state. They judged me based on my shirt. Of course now they all admit they were wrong, and we laugh about it to this day. I tell that story to show how sometimes others will judge us based off one moment. We should not let that one moment define us.

It’s hard to capture a good sunrise with a camera. There is so much happening in the scene. The different shades of orange and yellow are all over the place. I captured these photos on New Year’s Day. The family and I were on a cruise in the Caribbean during winter break. I had woken up early that morning even though I stayed up late the night before. When I woke up, I saw that the sun had not risen yet. I headed up to the top of the ship to make sure I wouldn’t miss it.

Check out this video I captured of this same sunset.
