Keep Going

“The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart.” – St. Jerome

I am currently reading “Undaunted Courage.” It is a biography about Lewis and Clark’s expedition to the west coast. The book uses writings from the two men’s journals, letters, and writings from the other men of the group. Seeing how the journey was first hand, and what happened to them is interesting. It is amazing they even made it at all. The author pulls no punches when talking about what happened on their journey, and what happened afterwards. It seems like at times they shouldn’t have made it. The kindness of the Native Americans in the region at the time was crucial. Without it, the expedition would have failed. One thing the books has taught me is the importance of sometimes you have to keep going. Even when things are tough, and it seems like you goal is out of sight, you can’t stop. When it is tough, seek out the help of others to give you the strength to continue.

I captured these photos while riding the Great White Pass Expressway. This expressway starts in Skagway, Alaska. The is the same route prospectors followed during the Alaskan Gold Rush in 1896. This was an dangerous route on foot. One part of the journey was called Dead Horse Gulch. That is because many horses didn’t make it passed this point. To get prospectors deeper into the mountains, a railroad was built. This railroad was an engineering marvel. From traveling steep terrain to crossing massive ravines, it is an amazing achievement. I captured hundreds of photos while riding the train. There are just some of the amazing views I saw on this journey.
