“You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” – Abraham Lincoln

A lot of people judge the Southern United States when winter weather hits it. They look at the numbers, and say that’s not that bad. While we don’t typically see feet of snow like some parts of the world. However, when we do get some snow it tends to slow things down. The biggest thing in the south is most local governments don’t have that much snow removal equipment. They keep some to try to take care of the major roads. Nature removes the rest of the snow. Typically when it snows in Charlotte, it stays below freezing for the day of the event. Then it goes right about freezing the next day, and melts most of it. The issues for my area starts when it melts during the day, but then refreezes at night. The way it refreezes it’s hard to see, and then causes major accidents. Driving in the snow isn’t that bad, it’s when it melts and refreezes that makes it so dangerous.

We have had two major winter weather events this winter. We had a fun and a annoying one. The first one we had was annoying because it was all sleet and freezing rain. We only received about a quarter of in an inch of freezing rain during that storm. That’s not a lot, but it only takes half inch to start to bring down trees. It doesn’t take a lot to do any damage. It didn’t take much to slow everything down in Charlotte. This also created great opportunities for me to take photos around my neighborhood. Here are some shots I captured after the first way hit. I didn’t walk around for too long. The sidewalks and streets were so slick. I almost fell over a few times.

I captured this video during the worst part of the storm.
