“Fortune favors the prepared mind.” – Louis Pasteur

I think I am turning into to that person who enjoys watching birds. Whenever I am outside, and see one flying I point it out. Just yesterday, while I was out at recess, I made sure my 5th graders saw a hawk flying overhead. After I pointed it out, I turned the moment into a lesson about consumers and producers in ecosystems. I even look for birds while I am sitting out in my backyard. Sometimes I even bring my camera with me to capture a photo of one. Why do I love checking out the birds, I’m not sure. Maybe it’s because I enjoy being out in nature. Any opportunity I have to spend time outside, I take it. I explore my neighborhood. I keep my class outside extra time at recess. If I can be outside, I am going to stay outside. If I am outside more, maybe I will see something flying around in the air.

When I am on vacation, I try to spend as much time outside. Last winter break, the family and I took a trip to Orlando, Florida. We spent our first day hanging out at Discovery Cove. Discovery Cove is a nature resort where you can spend the day with dolphins, flamingos, stingrays, and other amazing wildlife. The package deal with them also included a day pass to SeaWorld. We took advantage and spent our next day there. The park was crowded, but we got to see a lot of amazing wildlife. One of my favorite parts of the park was the penguin exhibit. We were pretty close to them, and we got a taste of what their environment is like. It was freezing at the exhibit. My son and I stayed because everyone else said it was too cold. We were the only ones who stayed for any amount of time.
