Getting Lost in the Woods

“People only see what they are prepared to see.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

One of my favorite things to do when I visit a new place is to explore. I love to check out new places and see what I can discover. The way I explore sometimes can be a little risky depending on what time of the year it is. A few weeks ago, I visited Hamilton Branch State Park to visit some family. We were staying in Augusta, and the park was close by so we headed up there for the afternoon. At one point everyone was swimming in the lake, so I decided to walk around with my camera for a little bit. While it might seem like a perfectly safe thing to do, there are some things I had to look out for. One was snakes. Right by the water is where they like to hang out. I also had to keep an eye out for ticks, making sure they didn’t land on me. Summer time in the southeast is also tick time. They love looking for warm parts of the body to sink their teeth into you. Finally, I had to make sure I didn’t get lost. Everything can look the same once you get deep into the woods. Luckily, I had my phone with me, and I didn’t go too far from the camp site.

Hamilton Branch State Park is located near the border of Georgia and South Carolina. The park sits on Strom Thurmond Lake. It has a few trails, a great view of the lake, and a nice campground.
