“The great advantage about telling the truth is that nobody ever believes it.” – Dorothy L. Sayers

When people think of photography, they typically imagine someone holding a massive camera in front of their face. They visualize getting the right position to capture the perfect angle. They also think of having their work featured in a major publication. While those things are great, it doesn’t define you as a photographer. For me, some of my favorite shots I didn’t even capture with my Nikon camera. I have some great photos I captured with my cell phone and GoPro. I will position myself in crazy ways to get the best shot. However, I have captured some good ones by simply standing still for a moment. My work has never been published anywhere. A few of my photos are featured around my school. Some coffee shops have reposted photos of me drinking coffee. Do I call myself a photographer? Yes I do. Is it my profession, no, but I enjoy it. You don’t need a fancy camera to take great shots, just the opportunity to practice.

Last winter, the family and I visited the British Virgin Islands. We snorkeled and hiked through the caves on the shore. This was an amazing experience. I didn’t bring my camera or cell phone with me to take photos. I was scared they would break or get ruined by all of the salt water. I did bring my GoPro. I have taken a lot of fun shots, and captured a lot of great video with my GoPro. One thing I love about it is that it is completely water proof. I captured some amazing video and shots under the water with it. I did use it on the way back to capture some great shots of the ride back to our port.
