Don’t Just Say It, Demonstrate It

“The true art of memory is the art of attention.” – Samuel Johnson

I’ve been an educator for 14 years now. I like to think that I have seen it all. However, every school year brings a new set of surprises. One thing that always stands out every year is how people will say they support education. Then they don’t do anything to support it. People will ask how they can support. But when it comes time to support, suddenly they can’t do it. Too many people today claim they are for something. They will do little, if anything, to show they really are for it. Sometimes people will do things that are actually against what they claim they are for. If you say you are for something, you should actually show it. This not only applies to larger issues, but also personal ones as well. If you say you want to be healthy, then set up healthy living habits. We want the benefits of a healthy lifestyle without the work. From eating better to exercise, we have to show that we concerned for our health. Too often our society says too much and does too little to demonstrate it.

I like to be outside. That’s not a claim that I can’t back up either. If the sun is out, expect me to be out there with it at one point. I tell my 5th graders all the time at work, when it’s not raining, expect to have recess outside. I can take them outside if it’s above 30 degrees. Anytime I can get outside, I am outside. Last spring, I started walking around my neighborhood to get outside more. A lot has changed in my area over the last 10 years. From more apartments and restaurants and even more traffic. Whenever I take my walks outside I like to bring my camera with me. Mainly for practice because we are heading to Europe. I want to be ready to capture the best photos. I want to photograph all of the sights I am going to see the best I can. The more I practice the better I get. I captured these shots during the last day off I had during the week. I wasn’t the only one out enjoying the sunshine. Street photography is fun because I think I’m being sneaky with my camera. I know it’s pretty obvious what I am doing. I am waiting for the moment where someone comments that they see themselves on my page.
