A Sea of White

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched – they must be felt with the heart.” – Helen Keller

A lot has changed in the last few months. As I look back on these photos, I am reminded of the inches of snow that covered our neighborhood. This snow shut our city down for days. I worked from home for three days. That snow was an eventful time. Now the sea of white has been replaced by a sea of yellow. Since it hasn’t rained in days, the pollen has nowhere to go but everywhere. When I look at my cameras at night, I see nothing but particles of pollen flying everywhere. Usually, I do okay with my allergies this time of the year, but now they are killing me. There have been days I would trade the sea of yellow for a sea of white.

Back at the end of January, Charlotte experienced one of the biggest snowstorms in decades. We got over a foot of snow. If you don’t live in the Southern United States, this amount is about 4 times more than usual. When the snow hit, it was so amazing how silent it was outside. The normal sounds of the city were gone. The silence made an impact. This winter brought about two snowstorms. I knew it was going to be cold. This year, the cold brought all forms of winter precipitation with it. From sleet to snow, we saw it all this winter. Both events closed schools for multiple days. Both events caused crazy runs at the grocery store. Those weeks were off the chain. One thing I did get to enjoy during this time was my photography. Could I have driven somewhere during that time? Yes, but I didn’t want to. I watched enough people get stuck in the snow. They were right in front of my house. I knew that it wasn’t worth it. Two of my vehicles would have done just fine in the snow. However, I didn’t want a fateful encounter with someone who shouldn’t be driving their car in the snow. Instead, I took walks around my neighborhood, and I brought my camera with me. I captured photos of the snow-filled landscapes because who knows when it will snow like this again.
