In the Distance

When I travel somewhere new, it’s hard to describe the feeling I have when I first step outside at our new destination. Most of our biggest trips have been on cruises. When we go to sleep one evening, we are in one place, and then when we wake up, we have arrived somewhere new. Typically, when we take a cruise, I have the same routine. I wake, get ready for the day, and then head up to the deck for a cup of coffee. Once I get up there, I take it all in. I look around and see what’s around me that I have never seen before, from the landscape to the buildings in the distance.

When we first arrived in Stornoway, Scotland, I had no idea what I would see. We had a busy day planned for us, and I wanted to be able to get in as much as possible. These might have been some of the best views I saw from the ship while it was in port. Most of our ports were located at commercial ports, so the views were not so good. These views at the Stornoway port were amazing. In the distance, you could see Lews Castle. Lews Castle is a Victorian-era castle located west of the town of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It was built in the years 1844–51 as a country house for Sir James Matheson, who had bought the whole island a few years previously with his fortune from the Chinese opium trade. I also could see a clipper ship passing a lighthouse in the distance. I captured these shots when we first arrived. Hopefully, they capture the full beauty of this place.
