“Let the beauty of what you love be what you do.” – Rumi

What do you love doing? Or here is a real tough question, what do you love about your job. Too often when it comes to work, we too often think about what we hate about. As an educator, I could list 100 things that I think need to change. There are also parts of the job that are necessary, but that I don’t necessary like. From complain training to collecting money for field trips, I am not a fan of those things but they need to be done. If those things take the front of my mind, then I forget about what I love about the job. That’s where we have to shift our thinking. We have to find something we love about it. There is a reason other than a paycheck why we chose a particular career. One thing I love about my job is that I make money to be able to visit amazing places. I also get the time off to be able to travel. There is always something we love about what we do, we just have to allow that to be in the front of our thoughts.

One of my favorite trips ever was to Alaska. We rode a train while we visited Skagway, Alaska. I started researching what to do in Skagway. The White Pass Scenic Railway was the top recommendation, so we signed up to experience it. The weather was perfect that day, and we were treated to some of the most incredible views I had ever seen. I took over 200 photos while we were on the train, spending most of my time standing on the platform, enjoying the amazing scenery. Here are some facts about the White Pass Scenic Railway: 1) Created During the Klondike Gold Rush. The gold rush is what brought most people to Alaska during the late 1800s. The railway was built to transport people from the coast to the inland, where gold was being found. 2) Designated an International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. Building the railway was a feat of modern engineering, sharing this designation with structures like the Eiffel Tower and the Panama Canal. 3) Climbs From Sea Level to 2,888 Feet at the Summit. It’s a tall climb from beginning to end, with incredible views along the way. 4) Passes Over Dead Horse Gulch. There are many historical landmarks along the route, but this one stands out for several reasons. Dead Horse Gulch gets its name from the 3,000 horses that died there, at one specific spot on the trail during the gold rush, illustrating the brutality and desperation of those seeking gold. 5) It Crosses the Border into Canada. This was my first time visiting Canada, and it certainly wasn’t the last. The spot is marked with a small structure and the flags of each country on their respective borders. This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. Needless to say, if you are ever in Skagway, you have to experience it at least once.
