Life is filled with opportunities. The question is: are we going to try to take advantage of them or not? In photography, opportunities can be disguised as moments. As photographers, we can either capture those moments or not. The best way a photographer can be ready for those moments is by having our equipment ready and practicing. The equipment part is all about making sure our camera batteries are charged, the right lens is on, and our camera is ready to go. Practice is one we have to make sure we’re doing on the regular. Finding moments to practice can be tricky, but we take advantage of them when we have them. I try to get my camera out every few weeks when I’m out riding my bike or taking walks around my neighborhood. This way, I can be ready for anything.
Being ready as a photographer can be the difference between a good shot and a bad shot. Every photographer wants to capture a moment at just the right time. The orcas at SeaWorld don’t really stand still. The place where they perform is called the Orca Stadium, and that place was packed when we went. In fact, SeaWorld was full of people the day we went. We sat in an area called the splash zone. I’m sure that meant there was a chance that you could get wet. I got a little nervous about having my camera out, but I wanted to get some good shots. I had my bag ready. I could put it back in a hurry. That was in case the splash zone lived up to its name. Fortunately, it didn’t. I was able to capture some great shots of the orcas. They performed in front of us.
